Healthcare is so expensive in the US because we aren’t just paying for the services. We are paying for the for-profit companies’ huge marketing budgets and the CEO’s Yach. And with so many insurers, none of them have the weight to negotiate prices down as they do in Europe.

Every other country in the wealthy world has this type of system. Americans pay more for our health care and get worse outcomes than Europeans and Canadians.

A single-payer system would save Americans money. According to the National Institutes of Health, American households could save, on average, $2,369 per year.

We can start here. Minnesota can start our own single-payer system or even start with a public option. It doesn’t have to be done nationally. In Canada, it was the provinces, not the federal government, that created their Universal health care system. And we can work with other states to increase our bargaining power.
